Reasons you should visit
an orthodontist ?
Orthodontics is a field specialising in the correction of dental malposition in order to improve the look and functioning of the teeth.
A separate discipline in dentistry, orthodontics aims to achieve dental occlusion by correcting malpositioned bones, jaws and teeth.
There is also a significant aesthetic dimension for patients.
In order to make the necessary improvements, orthodontists use a range of more or less complex appliances that exert force on the teeth. Any treatments exerting force on the bones are referred to as orthopaedic treatments.
When to start
Although children and adolescents represent the majority of orthodontics patients, adults are becoming increasingly interested in having straight teeth. Although the primary motivation is achieving that perfect smile, alignment of the teeth can also bring about other benefits in terms of health and balance.
Proper occlusion creates the right conditions for dental ageing, provides for a more balanced posture and promotes restful sleep, as well as enabling efficient brushing and combating gum disease.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment
at a young age
When treatment is indicated in children at a young age, it can :
- favourably influence jaw growth;
- balance out dental arch widths;
- improve tooth eruption patterns;
- decrease the risk of injury related to protruding upper incisors;
- improve appearance and self-confidence;
- simplify and/or reduces the duration of future corrective orthodontic treatment;
- reduce the risk of permanent teeth becoming impacted;
- improve certain elocution difficulties;
- preserve or recovers the necessary space for the eruption of permanent teeth.
An orthodontic evaluation at a young age will probably not preclude the need for renewed treatment later in life, but it may result in simpler and more effective treatment for patients whilst offering them reassurance about their dental health.
